Black Peppercorn

Whole peppercorns · Single origin · Kerala, India

This is the pepper we reach for every morning.

Freshly cracked, it’s vibrant and full of life — opening with a citrusy, tropical note, followed by a gentle heat that builds gradually and lingers just long enough to savor.

It’s an everyday pepper, especially over eggs, pasta, avocado, or sandwiches, where its freshness and balance transform simple meals into something memorable. Sometimes, the pepper itself becomes the reason for the dish.

Origin & Sourcing

This black pepper comes from Idukki, a high-altitude hill district in the Western Ghats of Kerala, known for producing deeply expressive, high-potency pepper shaped by cool climate, rich soil, and monsoon rains.

Our sourcing is guided by Jose, a family friend based in Kerala who owns farms and runs a logistics business. With deep on-ground knowledge and hands-on oversight, he works closely with smallholder farms practicing natural and regenerative methods while ensuring fair wages and basic amenities.

The peppercorns are harvested at peak maturity, carefully cleaned and sun-dried to preserve their essential oils and full character, then shipped in small batches to maintain freshness and integrity.

Tasting Notes

Bright and layered with citrusy top notes, followed by a clean, steady heat. Woody undertones and a cool, high-altitude freshness give way to a lingering, balanced finish.

How We Use It

Black pepper works across almost everything. It’s especially good freshly cracked over eggs, pasta, and avocado toast, where its fresh, citrusy character is most noticeable.

It’s also used in rice dishes like pulao, turmeric drinks (jamu), and as a finishing spice for vegetables, soups, stews, and lentils. In heartier cooking, it plays a central role in pepper-forward dishes such as pepper chicken roast and lamb pepper fry.

Cooking Tips

Grind just before use to bring out its full character. Add early in cooking for softer heat, or finish dishes with freshly ground pepper to highlight brightness and complexity.
