Cardamom Americano

A Bold Espresso with Aromatic Green Cardamom
By Sheril
A simple twist on a classic Americano, infused with the sweet, citrusy and floral aroma of freshly ground green cardamom.

Prep: 2 mins | Brew: 3 mins | Total: 5 mins | Yield: 1 serving

Cardamom and coffee have been enjoyed together across the Middle East and South Asia for generations. This version pairs the bold character of espresso with the fragrant warmth of The Curried Spirits Green Cardamom for a coffee that feels both familiar and unexpectedly aromatic. Freshly crushing the cardamom seeds just before brewing releases their natural oils and brings a subtle floral, citrusy character to every sip.

Ingredients

For One Cardamom Americano

Method – Espresso Machine

  1. Prepare the cardamom: Open 1–2 green cardamom pods and remove the seeds.
  2. Grind the cardamom: Using a mortar and pestle, grind the cardamom seeds into a fine powder. For a balanced cup, start with the seeds from 1 pod and adjust to taste.
  3. Combine with the coffee: Mix the freshly ground cardamom evenly into your ground espresso coffee before adding it to the portafilter.
  4. Pull the espresso: Dose and tamp as you normally would, then pull a double shot of espresso. Brewing the coffee and cardamom together allows the spice to infuse directly into the espresso.
  5. Build the Americano: Pour 4–6 oz hot water into a mug and add the freshly brewed espresso.
  6. Serve: Stir gently and enjoy as is, or add honey, sugar, or a small splash of milk if desired.

Method – At Home Without an Espresso Machine

  1. Prepare the cardamom: Open 1–2 green cardamom pods, remove the seeds, and lightly crush or grind them using a mortar and pestle.
  2. Prepare the coffee: Use a Moka pot, AeroPress, French press, or your preferred home brewing method to make a strong coffee.
  3. Add the cardamom: Add the freshly crushed cardamom seeds to the ground coffee before brewing whenever your brewing method allows. This gives the cardamom time to infuse as the coffee brews.
  4. Brew: Brew the coffee according to your normal method.
  5. Strain if needed: If your brewing method allows any cardamom sediment into the finished coffee, strain before serving.
  6. Finish Americano-style: Add hot water to taste until you reach your preferred strength.
  7. Serve: Enjoy black, or add honey, sugar, or a small splash of milk if desired.

Cardamom Strength Guide

Cardamom is wonderfully aromatic, so a little goes a long way. Adjust the amount depending on how prominent you want the spice to be.

Subtle: Seeds from ½–1 cardamom pod

Balanced: Seeds from 1 cardamom pod

Bold: Seeds from 2 cardamom pods

Tips for Best Flavor

  • Crush or grind the cardamom just before brewing for the freshest aroma.
  • For espresso, grind the cardamom seeds separately with a mortar and pestle and then mix them evenly into the ground coffee before pulling the shot.
  • Start with one cardamom pod per double shot. You can always increase the amount the next time you brew.
  • Keep the cardamom subtle enough to complement the espresso rather than overpower it.
  • If you prefer a slightly sweeter cup, a small amount of honey pairs particularly well with cardamom.

Why Use Whole Cardamom?

Whole cardamom pods protect the aromatic seeds and their natural oils until you're ready to use them. Opening the pod and grinding the seeds immediately before brewing releases a fresher, brighter aroma than using pre-ground cardamom.

The Curried Spirits Green Cardamom brings sweet, citrusy and floral notes that pair naturally with the deep roasted character of coffee.

Bold. Aromatic. Unexpected.
